Thanks for the question, Sheldon. It's a good one. However, budget by customer: job does not go to that level of detail. The only other way I could think of that might help is if you use estimates, but even then, it's not going to work as smoothly as I suspect you are envisioning. My only other suggestion would be to put this question out on the QuickBooks Live Community to see if any other QuickBooks ProAdvisors have come up with a better workaround that would serve your purpose.

I am interested in setting up a jobs budget for different projects. Is there any way that I can detail this down the actual vendors that will work on this project prior to receiving their bills?

Hi Prithipal,

If you are working on a project basis (as opposed to month-to-month) with your clients, generally job tracking will be useful to you.
1. You can track your time using the Time Tracking feature within QB, which will make billing much easier, too.
2. You can manually track progress of client projects using the job tracking feature, yes.
3. You can use the Reminders feature to track what is due when. You can print out your reminder if you open them on screen and then hit Ctrl+P.

Thanks Frank! I appreciate that. I just try to be practical and pay attention to what matters most - and that's usually maximizing the bottom line! :-)

Thanks Alowetta, I appreciate that! I hope to be posting new videos more frequently in the coming months, too. :-) Please do let me know if there is a particular topic in QuickBooks that seems to be a challenge and I may be able to do some short videos for you. :-)

Sorry, This is the revised version:

Hello,
Excellent Job tracking video…
I am starting out my Accounting practice, and was planning to manage my Clients in the following way:

1. Keep track of my Time on how long it taxes to complete work
for my client. (Is Job Tracking the best way, ?)

2. Possible Keep track of progress on some work (I believe Job Tracking the best way, ?)

3.Create additional fields in customer to keep track when say
payroll is due, Hst is due, Year end is, etc. (Would I be able to
create reports & or export them to excel)

Any suggestions will be really appreciated…

Thanks

I really enjoyed your Job Tracking video it gave me everything I needed to decide if I wanted to use Job Tracking in my business or not. This is a great site keep up the good work. I am impressed with your knowledge or the product and you ability to convey to the user how to get the most out of it in a short period of time. Thanks so much.

Thanks for this tutorial. I never understood the concept until now. I am what my CPA calls a "Reluctant Spouse Bookkeeper" for our small business, and have self-taught most of my experience in QBooks. I have signed up to follow your blog, as you seem to have the best understanding I have seen on the web, for helping in plain language.

Yes, you could use Job numbers as well. It is a versatile feature (and of course, I can think of some improvements to it that could be made as well).

So yes, feel free to use the Job Tracking feature in QuickBooks in whatever way works best for you - that's why it's there! :-)
